Sightseeing is twice as much fun in autumn with mild temperatures and lots of sun. Some cities in Europe are therefore particularly beautiful at this time of year. They combine culture, shopping and holiday flair.
Some cities in autumn are ideal for a short trip to warm weather: In addition to sightseeing, you can also soak up the sun and experience a lot. Outside of the high season, many popular travel destinations are also quieter – for example in Rome.
I have selected seven sunny cities worth seeing with mild temperatures in autumn. So you can temporarily escape the cold season.
1. Rome in Italy
With its numerous ancient buildings, the Italian metropolis of Rome is always a paradise for culture fans. But especially in autumn, the Eternal City is worth a visit. Because without the heat and crowds of tourists in summer, a visit in the off-season is much more relaxed.
With around six hours of sunshine and an average temperature of 22 degrees in October, the city is ideal for sightseeing. It is a bit fresher in November with 16 degrees and four hours of sunshine. How about a visit to the Colosseum? The ancient amphitheater is one of the most popular sights.
2. Barcelona in Spain
Barcelona is particularly impressive with its architecture - for example with the imposing Unesco World Heritage Site Sagrada Familia and other colorful masterpieces by the star architect Antoni Gaudí. In autumn, holidaymakers can discover the second largest city in Spain while the temperatures are still pleasant. 22 degrees and six hours of sunshine in October, 17 degrees and five hours of sunshine in November.
Shopping fans can then let off steam on the promenade La Rambla. On the other hand, if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you can enjoy the sunshine on the city beach of Barceloneta or take the cable car from the port to the more than 170 meter high Montjuïc mountain.
3. Athens in Greece
Anyone who wants to escape the low temperatures at home for a city trip will find the best conditions in Athens: 23 degrees and seven hours of sunshine in October and 19 degrees and six hours of sunshine in November.
The lively city also has a number of sightseeing hotspots to offer: in addition to well-known sights such as the Acropolis or the Agora, travelers will find ancient buildings on foot on every corner.
But a swim in the nearby sea is still possible in autumn - with 21 degrees it is still quite warm in October. With a glass of Greek wine and traditional dishes, the evenings can then end in a relaxed manner.
4. Lisbon in Portugal
The capital of Portugal offers culture, shopping and holiday flair with still 22 degrees and seven hours of sunshine a day in October and 18 degrees and five hours of sunshine in November. You can enjoy the warm rays of sunshine in Lisbon, for example, on a walk to the Torre de Belém.
Located directly on the water, from the tower holidaymakers not only have a great view of the two-kilometer-long suspension bridge Ponte 25 de Abril, but also of the entire area.
Delicious food is part of a city trip. So if you are in Lisbon, you should definitely try the traditional dried cod bacalhau. For dessert, try the region's most famous dessert: the freshly baked Pastel de Belém puff pastry tart.
5. Palma de Mallorca
If you want to combine island feeling with a city trip, travel to Mallorca. The island's capital, Palma, attracts visitors with high temperatures of around 23 degrees and seven hours of sunshine in October, and 19 degrees and six hours of sunshine in November. Due to the short arrival time and often cheap offers, a short trip at this time of year is particularly suitable.
Away from the beach, there is a lot to discover in the city, from culture to shopping to hip cafés. The Cathedral of Palma, the Plaça Major with historical buildings and the art museum Museu Fundación Juan March are particularly worth seeing. At the end of the day you should try tapas and paella in one of the numerous restaurants.
6. Marseilles in France
Marseille has French Mediterranean flair, a lively center and a pretty old port with many restaurants to offer, among other things. A detour to the Rue du Panier is particularly worthwhile – colorful houses and antique shop signs line up in the old town.
From the hilltop of the Notre-Dame de la Garde pilgrimage church, you have a picturesque view over the city and the Mediterranean Sea. But the inside of the church is also worth seeing. Holidaymakers can enjoy all of this in autumn with a mild 21 degrees and seven hours of sunshine a day. In November, when the temperature is 16 degrees, a jacket is necessary.
7. Istanbul in Turkey
A holiday in Turkey is not only worthwhile in summer. Even in autumn, travelers can still look forward to pleasant temperatures. With around 20 degrees and six hours of sunshine in autumn, you can admire the historic buildings of Istanbul in peace. In November, when it's 15 degrees, you'd rather throw something over your T-shirt.
You have a great overview of the huge city with almost 16 million inhabitants from the 67 meter high medieval Galata Tower. On the ground, one of the highlights is a visit to the Grand Bazaar.
