Donald Trump wants to be president again in 2024

Donald Trump is running for president for a third time in 2024. He announced that in a one-hour speech in Mar-a-Lago. The Republican is banking on border security, energy prices and preventing nuclear war as issues.

When a candidate runs for president in the USA, the choice of the place where he announces his candidacy is important. Whether he does it in front of a national monument or in a factory is highly symbolic. Donald Trump has chosen his estate in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. What does that mean? Firstly, Trump himself is his most important message. On the other hand, he ventures into the territory of his biggest rival within the party: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Whether Trump really becomes the Republican candidate remains to be seen. In-party primary elections follow, which can last well into 2024. Among other things, his former Vice President Mike Pence has indicated that he can imagine running for office himself. Especially since the midterms elections were not a success for Trump. Some candidates he personally campaigned for failed.

Trump delivers his inaugural speech in front of a typical background: golden chairs in the hall and no human supporters behind him – but lots of flags in red, white and blue. What is striking about Trump's style of speaking is that, unlike less showy politicians, he uses gestures sparingly. He also explains things in simple language - and keeps repeating it to get the message across.

He reinterprets the disappointing result in the midterms as a win. And he is also doing the same for his full term and half of Joe Biden's term. Under his presidency, which ended in January 2021, the USA would have prospered, their military opponents such as Iran or North Korea would have shown him respect, so that his term in office will mark an era of of peace and strength. He accuses the Democrat Biden of hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan and puts forward the thesis that the Ukraine war would not have happened under him.

Trump seems to want to make foreign policy an important topic in his campaign. He accuses Biden of worrying too much about the fight against climate change - simply because sea levels could rise by an inch in a few hundred years. The president pays too little attention to the nuclear danger. Domestically, Trump is back on wanting to tighten the border with Mexico. Drugs and crime come from there. Trump also wants to brace himself against the rise in prices – especially in the energy sector.

Trump only indirectly responds to the story that the Democrats committed electoral fraud in November 2020 and stole his election. He makes innuendos and jokes, but doesn't dare to name the point.
